Onomichi City and Yamato Transport Start Verification Tests for “Shimanami Kaido Same-day Hands-Free Delivery Service”

Onomichi City (Mayor: Yuko Hiratani; hereafter “Onomichi”) and Yamato Holdings subsidiary Yamato Transport Co., Ltd. (President and Chief Executive Officer: Yutaka Nagao; hereafter “Yamato Transport”) announced that they will start verification tests for “Shimanami KaidoSame-day Hands-Free Delivery Service” for tourists, including foreign visitors from March 13, 2019, supporting tourists to further enjoy cycling and sightseeing in Shimanami Kaido.

  1. Background

    Since May 2016, Onomichi and Yamato Transport have been collaborating and offering various tourism services, mainly around the Onomichi train station area, including “Luggage storage service” and “Bulk tax free services for shopping arcade.”

    Onomichi’s beloved tourist attraction Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi with Imabari City (“Imabari) along the Seto Inland Sea, is vibrant with many tourists from both Japan and abroad as a mecca for world-class cyclists. However, ways for checking and sending luggage to hotels while tourists go sightseeing are limited, and they have expressed their desire to travel without their luggage.

    Onomichi and Yamato signed a comprehensive partnership agreement on Feb 28, 2019 and will start verification tests for “Shimanami Kaido Same-day Hands-free Delivery Service” from March 13 onwards. They will continue the partnership, so tourists from both Japan and overseas will be able to experience the comfort of “Hands-free” travel and fully enjoy traveling around the Seto Inland Sea area.

    For luggage brought in to one of the 9 TA-Q-BIN Centers in the Shimanami Kaido area, same-day delivery is available to the desired hotel or another TA-Q-BIN center within the same area.

    • *Some items such as refrigerated items, frozen items, or bikes may not be accepted.
